Na: data presentation

So this project wanted me to learn how to deal with a difficult situations. I ran into problems every step of the way. I had a hard time with a concept. Then i captured video over break and i learned what it feels like to loose all your data. After that I rerecorded using a "mini disk" which we found to be the devil because it is impossible to edit. I also had grand ideas that i wanted to try out however didnt have the skill set to do or the programs.

I learned to deal with the situation at hand and make the best of it. I learned to problem solve and work on the fly.

The hierarchy of this project is probably the the music just because it is intense and rockish. I was trying to do something different and unexpected. I could probably try out a couple different things to get the feel that i need to find. All of my text is wanky and large. I need to interact

Na: data presentation ideas

my first idea is to have almost a little kid coloring or doodling style in a sense mixed with real media such as a real photograph. The data presentation would start with a picture of a child,s head. Then the head would open and then a rainbow like image/doodle would come out and fill the screen, the would draw a thought bubble that would then have a fact pop up in it. There would be lots of doodling around the fact bubble and one could be a flower and a cat and a car. The car would then drive off and the screen would then follow it and it would pull a fact behind it.....

next idea would be a child sitting in a desk drawing where you can see the whole child and there would be voice overs of different people saying the different facts with sad dramatic music in the back ground. Then at the end the child can turn her picture around and have a big smile and zoom in and have a catchy quote on it such as "So keep your child interested in Art and Keep them interested in Life" .......These facts could also run across the picture play the seem to dissolve into the child's head.

A book of a child's art work on each page or on each flip of a page the viewer would see are on the right and a fact on the left. There would be 5 different facts= 5 page flips.....Then on the last page there could be a picture of the child graduating or at a gallery opening where you can see the child's obvious success from art.

Another idea would be to have live video from over a child's back as they are drawing a pretty picture. While that picture is being drawn there can be facts popping up in thought bubbles behind its head. These bubbles are being filled with the 5 different facts about art in kids. The viewer will then make the association with the child making art and all the fact being about art.

My last idea is to use the facts that tell how many times more likely artist are in comparison to being "successful" and doing well in school...ex 4 times more likely to be recognized for an academic achievement award.

na:new project

I am thinking of 2 different directions to go into. One being an expansion on my concept to incorporate how the importance of art in a kids life is. Some thing alongs the lines of be a mentor....im wanting to have alot of children holding their art work or actually painting, and drawing then have facts on top simultaneously running in the frame. I want the children to look proud of.

Some concept titles could be "teach a child to draw and sketch out their future"

research
The importance of keeping art programs in schools, though, is not quite so analytical, so narrow or absolute as art classes make for better test scores.

The creation and appreciation of art in all its forms is an intricate part of cultural identification. It conveys a sense of geographical placement, of social mores, of a people's history and its future. In art there is symbolism, there is storytelling, there is the sense of humanity's place within the universe.

If these abstract concepts are not instilled in generations to come, if the true sense of artistry is lost to the masses, then the artistry of reading and writing, of mathematics and science will be lost. Humans will be little more than drones, until we are not even that.

Many schools face nasty budget cuts that threaten to eliminate their art programs, so the prospect of carving off a chunk of time for classroom instruction in drawing, painting, or sculpting seems rather bleak. Such gloom, however, perpetuates the myth that the arts should be confined to their respective sections of the school day, isolated from more "intellectual" endeavors.

In fact, according to a compendium of research published by the Arts Education Partnership, a coalition of philanthropic and government organizations focused on the role of arts in learning, academic success may actually depend as much on drawing as it does on geometry.

The partnership's research builds on educator Howard Gardner's seminal theory of multiple intelligences to indicate that arts education -- including the visual arts, dance, music, and drama -- enhances a student's ability to acquire core academic skills. Study in painting or drawing, for example, can improve complex reasoning, writing, and reading readiness, partly because the critical and creative faculties required to generate and appreciate art transfer cognitively to future learning experiences, and partly because the arts make learning fun: A student personally invested in his or her work will be far more likely to stick with it.

No surprise, then, that students exposed to these forms of creative expression achieve higher scores on standardized tests, or that at-risk students are more likely to stay in school when they participate in an arts program. At New York City's Heritage School, for instance, the arts are considered as important as other major subjects, says Principal Peter Dillon. Three-quarters of the students head off to four-year colleges.

"The observational skills needed to draw a careful sketch of a leaf, are the same skills you need to figure out scientifically what's going on in a pond, which are the same skills you need to 'read' your classmates," explains Dillon. And although his school's success depends on many factors, "I know there's a strong connection" between the arts and learning, he says. "I see it every day."

So, while it still may be tough to set out paint and clay for concentrated instruction, it's easy to add some colored pencils to an activity for a few moments at the beginning of the day or just before a break. It's worth the minutes.

facts

  1. Students who participate in arts programs are at least three times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, elected to class office within their schools, participate in a math and science fair, win an award for school attendance and win an award for writing an essay or poem.
  2. Third grade art students who participated in the Guggenheim Learning Through Art Program performed better in six categories of literacy and critical thinking skills - including thorough description, hypothesizing and reasoning - than did students who were not in the program.
  3. Studies show that students of the arts in all disciplines outperformed their non-arts peers on the SAT in 2007.
  4. Numerous studies affirm that students who receive music education in school improve their SAT and ACT scores in math, foreign language and creative writing.
  5. In California, 500,000 fewer school children are taking music education now than five years ago.
  6. Nine out of 10 parents surveyed opposed cuts to the arts in our schools, yet many policy makers seem tone-deaf to this critical part of educating our children.
  7. Experts estimate that out of a class of 30 students, up to ten will someday be employed in an arts-related occupation.
  8. American consumers spent $12.1 billion ($42 per person) on admissions to performing arts events in 2002.
  9. Nationally, the nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $166.2 billion in economic activity every year.
  10. The not-for-profit arts and culture industry generates 5.7 million jobs every year.
  11. About 86% of artists vote in comparison with about 60% of all Americans.

Young people who participate in the arts for at least three hours on three days each week through at least one full year are:

  • 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
  • 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools
  • 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
  • 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
  • 4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem

Young artists, as compared with their peers, are likely to:

  • Attend music, art, and dance classes nearly three times as frequently
  • Participate in youth groups nearly four times as frequently
  • Read for pleasure nearly twice as often
  • Perform community service more than four times as often

Another idea i have is a show opener. This would be a show about two artist living in new york city. This would be a comedy. I would have the pencil be the main focus on a blank piece of paper. The pencil would then begin to draw a continuous line drawing out all of the different names and positions. The pencil could also stop and erase, or even draw other things.

For the data project my audience would be parents and adults of children.
For the show opener my audience would be young adults watching network tv.

I am now wanting to go in the direction of the data project. I am going to fill it with facts about art as a learning to to grow a child's mind. I think with this project i can try to do something a little different and a little more serious. I tend to always us bright colors and loud provocative messages. So with this data project i would like to make something that is serious and toned down. I want this to have a strong message and really teach the viewer something. I am hoping to leave my viewers felling warm hearted.

na: statement for non linear project

Through doing this project i have watched it evolve in many ways from my initial flip book concept. In this final stage of the project my banana pencil concept to a more childish feel to it than it has had in the past. I felt like this concept had a juvenile feel to it so i went with the concept of artwork on a fridge for this interactive project. I included things like a mom telling her child "good job sweetie". This gives the viewer some clarification as to what this is an image of and the fact that it is piece of art work created and being displayed. I also think some of the non lyrical music adds some suspense and drama to the progressing animations and makes the viewer wonder what is going to happen next. Then with the sound effects of the sharpening pencil and the monkey sound are just acting in as magnets that make the sound of the shape they are potraying and it is tied directly back to the animations the viewer is watching or interacting with. Finally the song with works is yet again commenting on the art work that is being displayed on the fridge as well as using the term "bananas" which is directly related to my original animation. The sound effect such as the pencil or monkey are further clarified with there sound and dont leave much question for the viewer as to there meaning. Where the songs with out words are a little more open ended and could give the viewer many different feelings or emotions. Like when you click on the chip clip i feel a sense of building emotion driven through the animation underneath it. The voice over of my mom also gives added meaning and another level of understanding to the project. I chose to have one animation play with a click of a button and stop the same way. Then the other animation i chose to have playing with the start of a button then you are not allowed to turn it off. I did this on purpose so the viewer is forced to watch the whole thing and cant get out of it. A lot of my buttons you can play at the same time. If you get all those sound buttons playing at once it is pure chaos. I expect the viewer to play the videos at anytime, or even at the same time with no hesitation. However the sounds need to be played separately and one at a time. I hope that the viewers will watch the animations and then play all the different sounds and songs and discover the different feelings each one lends to the two separate animations. Like the banana song when it is played with the banana animation it adds humor and meaning to the animation. Some of non word songs can change the tone of the animation as well to a dark suspensful action. So with each pairing and combination i expect the viewer to learn and find somethings new whether it is good or bad.
I really am pleased with the final outcome of this piece. I took on a new challenge and over came it with minimal sweat and tears, sorry kidwell. It has made me want to learn more in flash and what else i can create or learn to do that is al ittle deeper. All in all this was an extremely beneficial and fun project where i learned a TON!

NA: interactive website itterations

I am wanting to keep this interactive site simple so that i can be guaranteed it works since this will be my first stab at scripting. I am trying to keep a concept just like what Garrett taught us to do with creating buttons then when you click on them they activate either a video/ animation or music.

na: interactive website

These are my 2 different directions under the same concept. I wanted to have a fridge and act like these animations where art work hung on the fridge. I will also use additional magnets to activate some of the other sounds i have collected. This is what i am thinking about in terms of what will make what sound the green magnet will make the scratching pencil markings, the star with be the scribbling pencil noises, the chip clip will make the sharpening sound, the pencil shaving sound will be the sick bass, and the banana animation will be holla back girl, and the last monkey image will be the other sound i have i dont know its name! I would also like for the magnets to move around on the fridge but im not sure how to do that?

na: final kinetic type animation

This is my final kinetic type animation....This has been a long and grueling process. In the beginning of this assignment i had to choose my noun, which was pencil. Then we were instructed to chose 3 verbs for the noun for preform. These verbs where sharpen, draw, and erase. The first challinging part of this assignment for me was to final a logical progression of event for these verbs to happen in part with my existing animation. So the logical cronola

Na: Project 2 nouns and verbs

For the next aspect of this project i have to choose 2 nouns related to my banana drawing pencil. My first noun is Pencil: then my actions can be erasing, sketching, sharpening. My second noun could be Mouth: then my actions would be chewing, smiling, kissing. If one of these didnt work i could use banana: actions being chewing, mashing, cutting.

Na: Combo Banana Pencil Animation

This is an animation done combining first and third person views. With this it was important to maintain rhythm and a pace where the viewer can understand what is going on and it is universally understood.

Na: 1st person Banana Pencil animation

This is my first person animation from the eyes of the peeler/artist. I felt that the animation needed to be slower since the action of eating/ and drawing with the banana is slower and not crazy movements filled.

this is my 3rd person animation drawn from the viewer perception.

Na: final story boards

This is my first person 20 frame story board where i peel the banana, to reveal a pencil, then discard the peel and draw a monkey, pin it up, then eat the pencil/banana.

3rd person story board

I had some problem with the colors on my images when i over saturated giving the sense of liver spots on my body. I kind of corrected this by reducing noise on the image.

Na: media investigation

For my story board i am playing around with 2 different medias. The first being an extremely over saturated bright colored frame. Or the half tone news paper tone image. Both imaged are half photograph and half hand drawn banana colored in with colored pencil. I truly feel that the over saturated image works a little better and feels more cohesive with the colored banana. This also feels more playful and his bright and artsy which works since the subject matter is about drawing and art being all around us.

Narrative: Activities

So while thinking of my sport/ hobby/game i enjoy i came up with
bowling, miming, dance, eating, jinga, and ribbon dancing

as for narrowing it down i think that i want to have eating a banana. However for the sequence of events i would say that there would be some peeling involved along with the consumption of the banana, followed by doing something funny with the peel. Either throwing it, playing with it, sticking it to something...this part im not to sure about yet.

I did however find some amazing videos on different ways people eat their bananas as inspiration to think outside the box.
